Checklist: Step One
Verify Your Receipts Are Properly Truncated
The Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act of 2003 (FACTA) sets a national standard requiring truncation of credit card information.
FACTA states the following:
- Credit and debit card receipts cannot include more than the last five digits of the card number
- The card's expiration date cannot be printed or displayed on your receipts
Important: These standards apply to both the customer copy and the merchant copy of the receipt!
If either your merchant copy or customer copy receipts improperly truncate the credit card number and/or expiration date, as indicated by the samples to the right, your processing solution will need to have its software updated.
If you use an Internet Gateway, Online Shopping Cart, or Cash Register system to process you credit/debit card transactions we recommend you contact your vendor directly to learn how to update your software.
If you use a point of sale (POS) terminal to process you credit/debit card transactions you can update your terminal software anytime, and it only take a few minutes.
